Diagnosing Crossfader Issues
The crossfader is arguably the most heavily abused component on any scratch mixer. Over time, even the legendary Rane magnetic faders or Pioneer Magvel faders will accumulate dust, carbon buildup, or physical wear. But how do you know if it just needs a good cleaning, or if it’s time for a total replacement?
Signs You Need a Cleaning
- Slight Audio Bleeding: If sound faintly leaks through when the fader is fully closed, it’s often just carbon dust shorting the track.
- Sticky or Gritty Feel: If the fader has lost its smooth glide, a professional deep clean and re-lubrication with specialized fader lube (like Caig DeoxIT FaderLube) can often restore it.
Signs You Need a Replacement
- Severe Audio Dropouts: If the audio completely cuts out in the middle of the fader travel, the conductive carbon track is likely worn entirely through. No amount of cleaning can fix a physically destroyed track.
- Bent Rails or Stems: A heavy hand can sometimes bend the metal stem or the internal guide rails. Once the physical geometry is compromised, the fader will never glide correctly again and must be replaced.
